Assessment, Modifications, and Correlating Standards

Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
Bloom's Level: Remembering
Modifications: If students are unable to type on the iPad, allow students to type their responses on a computer or to write their responses by hand.
Assessment: Set guidelines for assessment, such as a minimum number of sentences, or have students print off their responses and paste in their Writer's Notebook.
Hands-Head-Heart Chart
Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
Bloom's Level: Understanding
Modifications: Instead of having students fill out the chart by themselves, pull up the document via the SMART board and complete as a whole-class.
Assessment: Set guidelines for assessment, such as a set number of items per column, or simply have students share what they wrote aloud in their Book Club groups or to the class.
Pen Pal Letter
Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
Bloom's Level: Applying
Modifications: If students have a hard time writing, allow them to type their letter on the computer.
Assessment: Assess the letter by making sure they followed the guidelines for writing a friendly letter.
Compare & Contrast
Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
Bloom's Level: Analyzing
Modifications: Since not all students may be from America, I decided to use a cutout of the world rather than a cutout of the United States so that no student feels that his or her background or ethnicity is more important than another's.
Assessment: Set guidelines for assessment, such as a minimum number of items in each the compare, contrast, and similar portions.
Book Review
Common Core State Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.

Bloom's Level: Evaluating
Modifications: To gear-up this task, have students write their own review of the book in paragraph form instead of using the template provided.
Assessment: Assess the book review by making sure that all students have completed both template sheets - paying special attention to what they claimed was their favorite part of the book, as well as the star rating they gave the book.
Family Collage
